Rapid Structural Repairs Enable Property Sale To Go Ahead
To enable the sale of two stone cottages some major structural defects needed to be rectified. To re-instate structural integrity, Helifix masonry repair products were used to cost-effectively reinforce the stonework, stitch the cracks, provide lateral restraint and secure the gable end wall – all while retaining the building’s aesthetics. To stabilise the rubble-filled stone wall they installed grouted CemTies in a staggered grid pattern throughout the top half of the wall. To provide lateral restraint, BowTie HDs were installed across the full width of the gable, securing the wall to the upper storey floor joists as well as bonding stainless steel HeliBars into mortar beds.

Automatic Pump-Down System Helps Building Achieve Breeam
A new innovative method of providing an automatic pump-down for Mitsubishi Electric’s City Multi, heat recovery systems (R2) has helped a state of the art educational facility to achieve full BREEAM rating. The new system means that a pump-down is automatically started if the performance is affected by refrigerant loss. The system is automatically placed in the cooling mode; isolation valves are automatically closed in sequence to contain the refrigerant recovered from the system during the process. Subsequent operation is suspended until the problem can be investigated by a qualified technician; any leaks repaired will be retested within a month.

Beware Of The Misuse Of Fire Protection Products, Warns Nullifire
Cutting corners on fire protection is not only reckless, it is also a false economy. One good example of this is a new building recently surveyed by Nullifire, on behalf of the building’s owner. The client’s facilities manager had noticed what he suspected was inappropriate use of expanding foam to fill service penetrations in walls and ceilings in the basement area. The building had been handed over by the main contractor and signed off by Building Control. And yet the fire protection was totally inadequate. The outcome of this case is that a qualified, third-party accredited installer was then tasked with retrofitting Nullifire products throughout the building.

Animation Highlights Ease Of Achieving Renewable Commercial Heating
The four minute animation from Mitsubishi focuses on a modern school building and shows how easily air and water source heat pump systems can be incorporated into a building to work alongside, or replace traditional heating systems. A school was used in the animation because of the high demand for heating, but the technology is suitable for almost any commercial building. Mitsubishi Electric has developed a range of systems that can supply a building’s hot water and heating. The units offer complete flexibility of design and can work alongside current technologies to allow a
building to achieve renewable energy targets without major upheaval.
