Fire Retardant Paints

Northern CPDFire Retardant and Antibacterial Paint Ranges

The Northern Region of the ABE hosted Crown Paints, who delivered an excellent CPD event for our members and guests.

The evening was chaired by the Northern Region Chairman, George Armstrong FBEng, and presented by Mr David Spicer with his colleague, Mr David Hope, in support. The ABE President, Colin Bell, was also in attendance providing his continued support to his local region and keeping abreast of the fire safety hazards associated with painted surfaces.

Over the years of a painting cycle, multiple layers of conventional paint coatings – whether solvent or water based – can make a previously non-combustible substrate dangerous by their potential to burn, spreading fire rapidly and turning circulation and communal areas, or escape routes into a mass of flames in seconds. Thus a surface with an original Class 0 fire rating can be downgraded over the years to the worst classification of Class 4.

The problem of fire spread across painted walls and ceilings is becoming better understood and more widely acknowledged. The seminar discussed the problem and solution offered by Crown’s Timonox flame retardant products in restricting flame spread in buildings.

The seminar was discussed in the context of the changes to legislation as a consequence of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

The seminar was well received by all in attendance and was followed by buffet refreshments and the usual opportunity for networking with colleagues and friends.
