A vital component associated with the management of quality is the effectiveness of managers within a company. The competence and performance of managers, along with the key functions of management, are explored within this publication. Organisations require a valid means of assessing a manager's effectiveness and to this end the Management Functional Assessment Model (MFAM) is presented. The MFA Model recognises that sustainable excellence in all aspects of an organisation's performance (including quality aspects) is based on the management functions of forecasting/planning, organising, co-ordinating, motivating, controlling and communication. Efficient and effective organisation performance is achieved when all these interrelated management functions are understood and systematically managed. The MFAM provides a means for organisations to apply a 'Self Assessment' activity (using MFAM) to gauge the effectiveness of their managers. The MFA model has been designed to incorporate the concept of 'Triple Loop Learning', thereby making it possible for companies to reflect and improve upon total organisational performance. The model aids managers in determining the key activities to be addressed, in order to improve corporate performance as part of a continuous improvement process. In summary, this publication provides a valid rationale for the deployment of the MFA Model and emphasises that the model integrates fully with the critical activity of managing quality. The performance improvement of managers, achieved through inclusive contributions from both mangers and employees, is promoted.
