WILMOTT DIXON ISOLATES HEREFORD COLLEGE TECHNOLOGY BLOCK WITH KINETICS RIM-C FLOATING FLOOR SYSTEM
Wilmott Dixon has used the Kinetics Roll-out isolation material (RIM-C) system from CMS Vibration Solutions to structurally isolate the ground floor of a new technology block at Herefordshire College of Technology, preventing vibrations from travelling into, or out of, the recording studios.
Installation of the RIM-C system is very economical and the floor can be used immediately after the concrete has cured. A unique property of the precompressed fibreglass isolators is that the natural frequency of the pads remains essentially constant over a wide range of static and dynamic loads, with no appreciable degradation in the isolation performance during the projected lifetime of the floating floor.

OFF-SITE MANUFACTURE KEEPS LONDON TRANSPORT MUSEUM’S REFURB ON TRACK
The specification of an Armstrong off-site manufactured plant room for London’s Transport Museum cut programme times significantly for this major refurbishment project. By reducing the amount of on-site activity, the packaged plant room minimised the impact of the refurbishment on this famous Grade II listed Victorian building.
Manufacturing the plant room off-site enabled construction to take place concurrently with the project, instead of at the end of the building process. This removed it from the critical path, and final installation of the plant room could be achieved within days, instead of requiring a number of weeks. In addition, health and safety risk was significantly reduced.

LIMESCALE PROTECTION SYSTEM ALLEVIATES EXPLOSIVE SITUATION IN AUSTRALIA
Mining is an important industry in Western Australia. However, due to the extreme climate, mining poses many problems including hard water supply which resulted in limescale build-up.
Management at a mining camp decided to trial Hydropath patented water conditioning technology to reduce the impact of limescale.
The Hydroflow HS38 and C45 systems were installed at the site to remove existing scale and prevent new scale forming.
Personnel at the mine experienced numerous advantages following the installation of the Hydropath units, including better tasting drinking water, electrical elements were not covered in limescale and hot water systems did not become blocked by limescale causing irreparable damage.

WORD OF WARNING ON FLEXIBLE DAYLIGHTING SYSTEMS
With lighting typically accounting for some 40% of annual utility costs, organisations are continually searching for ways in which to light their buildings more efficiently in order to reduce their energy consumption.
Tubular Daylighting Systems, which channel light through a dome fitted to a building’s roof through a tube into the workspace below, are providing an increasingly popular solution.
While there are now a number of systems on the market making various claims, Solatube is committed only to providing rigid tube systems rather than the flexible duct products that incorporate material designed for air conditioning rather than lighting systems, which some organisations offer.

Q FLOORING INSTALLS FLOOR IN A STATE-OF-THE-ART MANUFACTURING PLANT
Q Flooring has installed a floor in a new state-of-the-art manufacturing plant for Fort Vale Engineering, who is the world leader in valves and safety systems for the road tankers and containers.
The new 7-acre factory is purpose built and includes the 8,600m² factory floor.
It was vital to install a floor covering specifically developed for heavy industrial use.
Before the system could be laid, the existing floor had to be prepared.
All cracks and dry joints were filled with semi-flexible resins, so once the final coating was applied a flat, seamless surface was achieved.
Q Flooring installed the new floor efficiently with minimum fuss.

MARKET LEADING BUSBAR RANGE EXPANDS
Holding nearly half the market for lighting busbar in the UK, Schneider Electric’s range of Canalis busbar trunking offers an economical and flexible replacement for traditional copper cables.
The range has been extended to include lighting accessories and other equipment.
Busbar trunking has a number of advantages over cable. Most notable of these is the ‘on-line’ flexibility of busbar systems – equipment can be safely connected and disconnected without the need to switch the power off, resulting in less downtime and increased productivity. Busbar is more energy efficient and carries a lower carbon footprint thanks to reduced use of copper and lower on-line heat losses.

NATURAL SPA KEEPS FLOWING THANKS TO AQUAKLEAR
Taipei in Taiwan benefits from a natural hot spring belt situated north of the city due to the island being located between an oceanic trench and volcanic system. This has proved to be a valuable resource for local residents, who utilise the source of hot water for everyday and leisure/spa usage. However, facilities staff at one of the newest housing developments have experienced severe scale build up due to the high levels of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in the water.
Hydropath’s patented AquaKlear water conditioning unit was specified, and after four months, the pipes were inspected and the amount of scale build up was noticeably reduced.

SYMPATHETIC STABILISATION OF FOUR CONJOINED AND PROTECTED PROPERTIES
Registered as buildings of local interest and protected under the Jersey Island Plan, four properties in St Helier were suffering from cracked, separated and unstable walls due to age and alterations over the years. The properties, dating back to 1725, required extensive structural stabilisation, prior to their restoration and conversion.
The work was carried out by Building Renovations Ltd, the local Helifix Approved Installer.
Stainless steel HeliBars were bonded into channelled out mortar beds with HeliBond cementitious grout.
To reconnect separated party walls, grouted CemTies were installed into pre-drilled clearance holes through the façade and into the internal walls.

ST ANDREWS SCORES A HOLE IN ONE
St Andrews, the home of golf, is set to benefit from a clubhouse with an eco-friendly heating and cooling system from Mitsubishi Electric.
The St Andrews Links Trust is undergoing a sustainable heating and cooling project, with the assistance of Specialist Mechanical Services (SMS) who specified and designed a new heat pump system.
One of the main benefits is that there will be a considerable heat rejection from the kitchen area which will be recovered through the system to provide heating in other areas of the building, either directly through the VRF system or indirectly through the ground loops. Running costs should be very low.

SYMPATHETIC RESTORATION OF HISTORIC BLACKSMITH’S FORGE
A combination of extreme dilapidation, severely cracked and damaged brickwork and nearby mature trees caused various difficulties for the renovation and conversion of an historic blacksmith’s forge to a modern dwelling at Beausale in Warwickshire.
Structural repair specialists, Helifix Ltd designed a programme to stitch cracks and secure the existing masonry.
Pairs of stainless steel HeliBars were bonded, using HeliBond cementitious grout, into channelled out mortar beds in the existing masonry at specified levels and introduced into the new build elements, as the work progressed around the whole structure. This reinforced the brickwork, stitched cracks and formed deep masonry beams that distributed the structural loads.
