To be a Building Engineer you will need to:
- be practical
- be creative
- like finding solutions to problems
- be able to communicate with others and want to help people and improve our surroundings.
How do I start to become qualified?
Initially you will need a good grounding in Numeracy, Literacy and Science at GCSE level.
You then have further options:
You may then choose to study at ‘A’ level and progress onto a degree in a relevant subject. Alternatively, you may progress through qualifications such as BTEC National Certificates and Diplomas and Higher National Certificates or Diplomas, and these, combined with experience and possibly vocational qualifications, may ultimately lead to a professional qualification and membership of the ABE.
It is also possible to undertake Advanced Apprenticeships in some areas of Building Engineering and further pathways are currently in development.
For those not choosing the academic route, many vocational qualifications will demonstrate an individual’s competence to carry out the job of a Building Engineer and can lead to professional qualifications.
Will all of this lead to membership of the ABE?
We recognise the importance of supporting you as you embark on your chosen career. Student membership is offered to those studying a qualification specialising in the Built Environment, and Technician membership is offered to those who are working in the industry and who have acheived an NVQ 2/3 or equivalent in a relevant area.
If you have completed an honours degree, you may be eligible for Graduate membership which in turn will allow you to progress (subject to meeting the criteria) to Corporate membership.
All corporate members are qualified to degree level or equivalent and have relevant experience.
If you have any questions relating to membership of the ABE, please contact our Membership Team on 01604 404121.
