Vice President - John Humphries

John Humphries is a Corporate Fellow of the Association of Building Engineers, a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Fellow of the IAAS. John was installed as Vice President of the ABE in May 2009.

John has 34 years experience in Building Control, and is currently Operations Manager for the London Borough of Brent within Building Control Consultancy Services. In addition to his deputy role, he manages an area team and leads on Service Development initiatives, IT, Quality Assurance, Environmental Management and sustainability issues. He commenced his career in Building Control with Haringey Council in 1975 and was one of the first Building Control graduates in the Country, gaining an Honours Building Control degree at the Polytechnic of Central London (now the University of Westminster) in 1979.

John has been an active member of the Association for 29 years, joining the IAAS in 1980, and has served as Chair of Beds and Herts Branch from 1994 to 1997 and in 1998-99. He has also held posts of Branch Secretary and Treasurer for a number of years. In May 2007, John was co-opted onto Council, being elected as a Member of Council for a period of three years in May 2008. John has contributed to draft and consultation documents and served as a member of staffing committee. He also sits on the interviewing panel for the Assessment of Professional Competence and disiplinary panels. John has a keen interest in environmental matters and is ABE representative on the Board of the Society for the Environment (SocEnv) and Policy Forum.

The future holds many challenges and opportunities for the Association and its members at local, national and international levels. Many of our members will have key roles in taking forward the climate change and sustainability agenda and helping to develop the infrastructure and buildings associated with the London 2012 Olympics. John will work to enhance, develop and promote the Association and seek to ensure that the ABE grows even stronger for the benefit of its members and the industry as a whole.
