Fire Safety Award 2004
FIRE SAFETY AWARD 2004
The Association of Building Engineers prides itself on its contribution to Fire Safety and in particular the contribution by its members to the development and creation of a fire safe environment. As part of this process the Association provides a Fire Safety Award. The Fire Safety Award is presented to a person, company or organisation who, through invention, research, design, publicity, education, training or any other related activity, has been nominated, and in the opinion of the award panel, has made a significant contribution to the advancement of fire safety, fire protection or fire engineering in the past year. 2004 was a first for the Association in that a member of the Presidential Team, David Smith VPBEng CEng FIFireE FBEng FCII ASFPE, Past President of the Institution of Fire Engineers, was nominated. David's work and commitment to the development of British Standards both as an individual and chairperson focused on developments within the BS 5588 series and proposals geared towards management and fire safety engineering. His activity in this area included presentations at local, national and international level working closely with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. David was presented with his Award by ABE President, Chris Dawson, at the Integrating Building Design and Fire & Rescue Service Procedures seminar in Northampton. This event also recognised David's contribution towards the Building Disaster Assessment Group (BDAG) and his involvement in the transfer of research into practice. The seminar considered the roles of BDAG, its development and activity in response to the 9/11 disaster and the research instigated as part of the Government's response. The event looked very closely at the way building design and fire service procedures interact and the way in which the responsibilities and roles for the future may change. It was pleasing to see the commitment of the Government by way of investment into research geared to human and physical responses by the fire and rescue service in a fully tested fire situation. Feedback from the research is being considered in the developments geared towards the Building Regulations Part B which is currently under review. David participated during the proceedings and led the summary and open forum discussion: Where do we go from here? A very positive event and worthy recognition of David Smith and the Fire Safety Award 2004.
