FIRE SAFETY ENGINEERING GROUP
ABE FIRE SAFETY AWARD 2003
On Friday 4 April David Gibson, ABE Chief Executive, and Pat Reddin, Honorary Secretary, attended the Annual Dinner of the Fire Safety Engineering Group (FSEG) at which the presentation for the Fire Safety Award 2003 was made.
Ian Wilson, Chairman of the FSEG, made a brief introductory speech before announcing the results.
The Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade Community Fire Safety Department received a commendation for undertaking Local Public Service Agreements (LPSAs) as a means by which key performance indicators can be assessed for initiatives focused in the following areas:-
> development of a new Home Fire Safety Check scheme
> improvements upon an existing Schools Fire Safety Education Programme
> development of a new fire safety education resource for schools
> various public education events
> wide range of Community Outreach activities
> arson reduction strategies
A series of technical articles and progress reports in January 2003 highlighted the following about the winner of the Award:-
> for being a very public face in Fire Safety Engineering (FSE) - yet managing in a 'self-effacing' style to promote FSE to the benefit of all those operating in the sectors and specialisms involved
> for maintaining, over a decade or more, support for 'quality of action' concepts by promoting (and thereby arguing for) a soundly based technical approach in fulfilling the delivery of FSE into the market place
> for not only maintaining a 'shop window' wherein providers within the field of FSE could display their products and services, but also for providing an exchange of ideas and thereby encouraging others to come forward with solutions for seemingly intractable problems
> for airing the concepts in which groupings are encouraged to come together to harmonise their requests in a coherent voice where legislative or standard changes are needed/desirable - particularly within the Fire Industry Confederation
> for personal involvement in developing standards within committee structures.
For managing to remain an unsung hero to everyone in FSE, the winner of the Fire Safety Award 2003 was announced as John Northey BA FIFireE, Editor, Fire Safe Engineering. He received an engraved ABE decanter and certificate from Pat Reddin.
